Metcon completes Three New Energy Positive Schools in Horry County

On Wednesday, August 23rd, Horry County School started their first day of school in brand new state of the art “Energy Positive” facilities. Ten Oaks Middle School, Socastee Elem. School, and St. James Intermediate Schools are among the best new schools in Myrtle Beach, SC.  “The new Energy Positive schools in Horry County will be an elite class of building setting the new standard in the U.S. for 21st century schools" said Aaron Thomas, President and CEO of Metcon,Inc. "Metcon is honored to have had the opportunity to work with Horry County Schools & SFL+a Architects to deliver these Energy Positive buildings to the students and community.

The project consisted of (3) new energy positive schools that included 492,174 sf and will house 3,200 students in Horry County, SC. These are high-performance facilities that include a safe and secure learning environment and feature energy positive building systems. The buildings will feature on-site renewable energy generation to produce more energy than the annual operation each school requires. The schools consist of thermal energy storage, centralized geothermal HVAC, LED lighting, indoor air quality monitoring, an enhanced building automation system, and a superior building envelope.  The schools will provide a positive learning environment via collaborative spaces, portable libraries, smart boards, media hubs, exploratory classrooms, signature core spaces, and their overall exquisite appearance. Interactive learning environments give students a different way to absorb new information and will optimize student learning.

Architect and First Floor owner, Robbie Ferris conducted a tour on Thursday, August 17th for Horry County Board Members, staff members, and the local media,  Mr. Ferris gave an extensive walk through of the schools discussing the energy positive design and allowed folks to get an up close look at the building features that make them energy positive. Safety, controlled entrance, appealing interior finishes, flexible collaborative space for students, interactive learning environment for students, and using the school as a teaching tool are among the topics Mr. Ferris covered.

Metcon|TA Loving in association with Baldwin Construction served as  the general contractor for the energy positive schools in Horry County.  Two more energy positive schools are well underway.  Myrtle Beach Middle is slated to be competed by December 2017 and Socastee Middle school will be complete by March 2018.
