Taken from: NCDOL (N.C. Department of Labor)On Wednesday, Oct. 12, N.C. Department of Labor (NCDOL) Commissioner Josh Dobson presented Metcon, Inc. (Metcon) with a Building Star recertification award at the Raleigh office location. This is Metcon’s second recertification as a Building Star site.
“I would like to congratulate Metcon on their second Building Star recertification. They transcended the necessary stringent requirements to be recognized as a Building Star site, which is a testament to Metcon’s deep commitment to developing and maintaining a safe workplace for their employees,” said Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson.
Metcon developed a company-wide safety initiative called Goal One Safety. This was created to encourage a positive safety culture on the jobsite to ensure every project meets the highest safety measure necessary for each specific site. This is done through providing their employees with up-to-date safety training as well as monthly training classes that occur on-site. Training topics include but are not limited to ways for employees to identify, evaluate and control hazards and safety issues, as well as formal and informal courses such the 30-hour OSHA training and Electrical and Fall Protection.
“Goal One Safety insures that by creating the right environment of safety and encouraging our team members to be courageous leaders when it comes to safety on the jobsite, we know we can positively impact our personal safety, well-being and the lives of others,” said Director of Safety and Risk Management Tonya Warren.
Since the company’s inception in 2000, they have completed more than 800 projects across North and South Carolina. The diverse range of work includes school buildings at every level of education, government, commercial and healthcare buildings. Metcon is also the leading construction company for completed energy positive buildings in the United States.
The Building Star Program is created solely for the construction industry. It recognizes construction worksites and/or companies (including general contractors and subcontractors) that have Carolina Star quality safety and health programs but require demonstration of approaches and procedures that differ from current Carolina Star requirements. Building Star participants are proactive and partner with the NCDOL’s Occupational Safety and Health Division in an effort to prevent fatalities, injuries and illnesses through a system focused on management commitment and leadership, employee involvement and participation, hazard identification and evaluation, hazard prevention and control and safety and health training.
“Building Star Program requirements are for the participants’ most recent three-year average for both Total Recordable Case (TRC) rates and cases with Days Away from work, job Transfer or Restriction (DART) rates to be at least 50% of the most recently published federal BLS rates for the appropriate construction industry classification code,” said Carolina Star Consultant Tyrone Taylor. “We are extremely proud to partner with Metcon as they continue to be a leader in the North Carolina construction industry.”
